I love getting mail–packages, letters and postcards all make my day!
When sending mail, please keep in mind that the postal system in Togo is nowhere near as efficient as the U.S. postal system. In general, letters will take two to five weeks to arrive.
Packages will take longer; they should only be under 5 pounds and should be sent by airmail. There are import duties levied on packages arriving in Togo based on the stated value of the contents. A well-insured package, while more likely to arrive intact, will cost a lot in import duties.
Helpful hint: padded envelopes with “Dieu est grand” or “Dieu te vois” written in bold sharpie arrive most intact, according to another volunteer. Also, write “fragile,” and/or “priority” on it.
Things to send in packages:
-granola bars
-magazines
-newspaper clippings
-tea/instant coffee packets
-just add water sauce packets
-awesome letters full of news/stories
-dried fruit
Gale, I was just getting ready to send Katie a package and I was a little confused also by the above. I went back through her old posts and found that the first address listed as “New Address” is the one to send to now.
Hi Everyone, thanks for thinking of Katie and sending her care packages. She told me she has a lot of treats and supplies to last her the next few months, so please hold off on sending more until next year. Do keep sending the cards and letters! Katie is very appreciative that everyone is thinking of her. She is the envy of the the other Peace Corps Volunteers to get so many care packages and letters.
